Manuel Eric Balaaldia Serrantes - Nurse Aide Instructor
I have been at Highbridge for almost 8 years. It is the best job I have ever had. For me it is all about "get and give". I teach my students about nursing and they teach me about life.
I have been at Highbridge for all of one year - and I am already exhausted. My title is Administrative Assistant to Director of Personnel - Basically I set up all the parties that take place at Highbridge - That's why I'm exhausted.
I am a 1st and 3rd grade counselor for the Youth Services Department of Highbridge. Before I started working at Highbridge I was working at McDonalds and attending Monroe College . After a year at McDonalds I was looking for change. I am not attending College at the moment but, I am getting ready to go back to school. I want to get my degree in Child Education. In the near future I want to become a 1st grade teacher.
I started at Highbridge 10 years ago working at Br. Ed's office located at 1248 Nelson Avenue and also working with Pat Gayle, Bernadette Kelly, and Deb Doom. Then I was working for the Education department to help out for the training of Nurse Aide Program with Everette Green and Sr. Cathy. I also did data entry with Eufemia and Amparo. Now I'm the receptionist at 979 Ogden Avenue. The first person people see at the front desk is me with a smile ready to answer any questions.
I have been working at Highbridge for almost a year now. My current position is Administrative Assistant for the Bridge Builders Project. My focus is helping others in the best way possible. I believe if we all took the time to listen and provide positive support and feedback to one another, our children will grow up to see and value the good in everyone. I am currently working on a Public Administration degree with the goal to continue to help others.
I am the coordinator of the Highbridge Community Life Ctr Senior Outreach Program and an educational aide in the 1st to 3rd grade section of the Get and Give After School Program. I stated at Highbridge Community Life Ctr as a Dominican Volunteer in August of 2003. I am now back after a year and a half away. I feel very fortunate to be working at a place so dedicated to improving the lives of those who live in the Highbridge community.
I am proud to have been a teacher in the nurse aid program for many years. I have given a lot but all of it is very small in comparison to what I have received in return from my hundreds of students.
As Administrative Assistant in the Executive Directors office I help to manage the office and coordinate some special annual events. One of these is the gifts we get from parishes in NJ. at Christmas time.
The word "education" come from the Latin word "educare". It means to bring out and that is exactly what we do at Highbridge. We help our students to bring out their assets and skills in new ways.
Working at Highbridge has been both peaceful and productive for me. I see progression every day and this gives me an inner peace knowing that I have made a difference. Now if we all could find the same kind of peace in other parts of the world - Right?
