I started as Editor-in-Chief of the Highbridge Horizon newspaper in August, and I can honestly say that I love my job. Why? Pretty simple—because I love writing, I love talking to and interacting with people, and I love this community and the opportunity I have been given to help represent it. Being a reporter allows you to talk to a tremendous diversity of people from all different perspectives and backgrounds, and to give a voice to the thoughts and emotions of the people you write about. Having the chance to do that in this neighborhood, where people aren’t often given such a forum, is a sincere privilege, a tremendous learning experience for me, and also a lot of fun. I also teach youth journalism classes as part of the Get and Give after-school program at Highbridge Community Life Center Youth Services. I teach one group of 1st through 3rd graders, two groups of 4th through 8th graders, and one group of 9th through 12th graders. Whether it’s practicing how to do a good interview, discussing what does and doesn’t make for interesting news, or writing stories that will appear in the Horizon, the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students has been inspiring.
I have been with Highbridge for many years. I'm a single parent. I came to Highbridge as a client then years later I was hired as receptionist. Highbridge is a part of me. I also worked for the Senior Program Pals Care and also as a Family Support Worker assistant. I currently work in the Storefront where we all come together to help walk-ins and the community.
About 6 years ago I was asked by Kevin Price to join the faculty of Highbridge's Nurse Aide Program. As the Director of Staff Development in a nursing home, it is a most rewarding experience to prepare the student nursing assistants for the tasks they will perform in a nursing home or hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistants. I am proud to be a part of our excellent training center!
