Andre Maitre |
|
Maitre, a first-generation American of St. Lucian descent left high school nine years ago after a demanding work schedule conflicted with his academic career. "I had to choose between work and school and unfortunately, I couldn't afford to stay in school," he said. After later being laid off, Maitre knew that he would need an education to fulfill his potential and improve his socio-economic status. "My teacher was very patient with me and encouraged me to finish," Maitre explains. "I'm glad he did because my education has stopped me from being depressed." A resident of Highbridge--an area with one of the highest High School dropout rates in the city--College was something Maitre hoped for but was unsure of whether he would be able to achieve. "I feel proud that at least I tried, and grateful that I came to a place like Highbridge to receive the help that I needed."
Maitre hope to both work and attend his college classes. His future goals include opening himself up to new experiences, travel, and helping young adults to realize that they are never too old or it is never too late to pursue secondary education. |
